The Madison County Humane Society sent out a call for help. They were overrun with hounds that had been dumped at the end of hunting season.  After talking with Vik at Michigan Coonhound Rescue, it was decided that we would foster and place Jethro, a gentle and sweet foxhound.  John and Brian drove to the shelter in Virginia to get him.  Jethro's name became Harry on the way back to New Hampshire and John was already hinting that he thought Harry should stay.

We took Harry to our vet to check out his swollen joints.  Harry had extensive testing, which came back negative, including a scare when experts told us that he probably had Leishmaniasis.  After retesting, Harry was diagnosed with Ehrlichiosis and Bartonella, which meant 2 long-term antibiotics. Thanks to Harry's wonderful vets, George Messenger, DVM for his patience and persistence in diagnosing Harry, and Katherine Evans, DVM for treating Harry with love, alternative therapies and zucchini.

Harry was given a clean bill of health on March 23, 2001, but he will always suffer from severe arthritis. On bad days, Harry has a hard time even standing, and on good days...well, he's earned the nickname "The Trouble with Harry." Harry's health has continued to improve and he very rarely limps any more. He seems to have more energy every day and even seems to enjoy the snow and cold weather more...at least he's not complaining as much!  Harry is not getting into nearly as much trouble either now that he's able to get adequate exercise, but I'm sure he'll be good for another story or two!

Harry has been very busy since our last update finding ways to entertain himself.  He has developed a fondness for visiting the local pub, where he gets into all sorts of trouble.  To read more about what kind of trouble Harry has gotten into lately, please visit our Hound Tales pages.

Harry shows neurological symptoms after licking toxic toads! It's a good thing he doesn't live in Florida where licking toads can prove fatal!

Harry coming in from a run with the other dogs. Although he'll always be troubled by arthritis, he's come a long way since the days he had to be carried and couldn't stand on his own.
