We couldn't stand how quiet the house was without Hobo. Not only that, but Emma sat staring out the window for hours looking for him, we were sure she would run away and try to find him if she got out. We starting calling rescue groups looking for a Vizsla, but there wasn't a local chapter set up and other chapters had waiting lists. We started calling breeders looking for an older, male dog, until we finally gave up on Vizslas, there just weren't any needing a home. The day we were to go look at a litter of lab puppies, we got a call from a man; he was upset, were we still looking for a Vizsla? Someone was taking a 17-month old female to be put down; she had done $20,000 worth of damage to her owner's home. We didn't think Emma would get along with a female, but we went to see her anyway just to get out of the house. To make a long story short, Emma took one look at "Lucy" and squealed with delight! Although Lucy gets into trouble, even with hours of exercise daily, she hasn't been destructive other than the time she ate the sofa while crated! She's kept us so busy, and has been so affectionate and happy that she's done a wonderful job filling the hole in our hearts. Emma and Lucy are as close as two dogs can be. I doubt anyone would question whether or not dogs feel love after seeing them together. Shortly after her 6th birthday on June 25, 2002, Dr. Katherine Evans found a small lump on Lucy's right rear leg which she suspected was a mast cell tumor. Hoping it was an insect bite, we were told to keep an eye on it and to have it checked if it was still there in a week. During the next week, we checked the lump daily and noted that it changed size; shrinking and growing, growing and shrinking. It did turn out to be a mast cell tumor, and it was removed by Dr. George Messenger. Mast cell tumors are graded from 1 to 3 with 1 being the least aggressive and 3 the most aggressive. Lucy's came back Grade 2 with clean margins, which means Dr. George was able to get it all. Dr. Evans has recommended supplements and a special low carbohydrate diet to help ensure the cancer stays away for good, and Lucy seems to be doing very well on it. We're keeping good thoughts that our baby girl stays healthy, and of course, making sure she becomes even more spoiled than she was. Lucy has been healthy since our last update. Although she is very gray at age nine, she is still active and gets in trouble daily. She has more of the benign lumps and bumps associated with aging, but no signs of the cancer returning. Lucy has decided she has been on the cancer diet long enough and has been on a banana stealing mission lately, which keeps us on our toes trying to find a safe place she cannot reach. |

Lucy recognized the stuffed toy she received for her ninth birthday as a butterfly. She kept bringing it over to us to make it fly erratically, like butterflies do, getting frustrated when we didn't do it right.
